Under the Big Top

The European Union (EU) can be as complex as the double helix, so when the political entity that comprises 27 different countries and covers 450 million people needed an exhibit for the Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara, the largest literary event in Latin America, it needed to be able to represent the EU as a whole without focusing on any given member.
With a design inspired by the New European Bauhaus movement — including geometric shapes with minimal ornamentation and bold primary colors — the EU draped a massive textile installation from the ceiling that established a visual focal point unavoidable from anywhere in the venue. Its scope cleverly reflected the size and shape of the EU itself: the sprawling ceiling element covered the entire pavilion area of nearly 23,500 square feet and its 27 suspended forms represented all the EU members, with each figure about 5 feet tall.

Down on the ground, beneath the canopy of many colors, brighter hues designated spaces set aside for events, while quieter tones earmarked areas for reading and relaxation, creating intuitive navigation for visitors. A European bookstore showcased works by authors from each EU member, some in their original languages with others translated into Spanish. Additionally, a digital media library and a duo of performance stages flanked a sizable central agora — a kind of public square popularized in ancient Greece — which served as a spot for discussions and gatherings.
Because sustainability is another key aspect of the New European Bauhaus design philosophy, the EU stand fully embraced green design with its striking installation that combined Mexican serape fabric with 3D-printed plants made from recycled plastic using Pure.Tech, a technology that captures CO2 and other pollutants then transforms them into inert particles. Beneath the supersized canopy where color and culture converged, the EU's pavilion transformed complexity into connection. E
