Q.
We have a pet-friendly office, but I was bitten badly by a dog and am afraid of them. How can I ask others to keep their dogs away from me at the office?

A.
I'm sorry to hear about your very valid fear of dogs. I also believe there are ways you and your colleagues can create a situation that allows you to feel safe.

Find a calm moment when your colleagues are not busy, and suggest a quick chat in a comfortable, neutral setting, such as a meeting room or a break area. Start the conversation by acknowledging the pet-friendly policy and the positive environment it creates. Then, calmly explain that you had an experience that made you fearful of dogs. Be open and honest about how it affects you and request their cooperation by asking if they would keep their dogs away from your workspace or any areas you frequently visit. Assure them that it's not because you dislike dogs, but rather because you want to feel more at ease in the office. You might even offer alternative solutions, such as keeping their dogs in designated areas or introducing a system where people can temporarily move them if someone feels uncomfortable.

Finally, let your coworkers know how much you appreciate their cooperation. Remember that effective communication is key here, especially because dog owners can be deeply attached to their pets. But I find that if you approach people sincerely, they're usually willing — and even eager — to help. E
