Ideas That Work
Key to Connection
Mysterious keys have long played a role in books and films — unlocking secret gardens, pirate treasure, or alternate worlds — so it's no surprise that when EXHIBITORLIVE 2025 attendees found a small key tucked into their show bag, curiosity took hold. The keychain bore the logo and booth number of Steelhead Productions, leading attendees to the company's environment, where staff members handed them a miniature padlock and invited them to clip it onto one of several chains cascading from ceiling to floor. A Polaroid camera captured the moment, and each photo was added to a growing collage behind the booth's bar area. The result was part art installation, part social catalyst — a moment of personal connection that offered just enough mystery and intrigue to spark meaningful conversations and unlock the Steelhead story.
Mining for Meaning
When Optimum Crush Inc. (OC) surpassed $1 million in donations through its Community Optimization Program, the mining parts supplier turned its MINExpo 2024 booth into a celebration. Instead of showcasing machinery, OC partnered with students from the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) to create artistic interpretations of its top-selling parts. The result? A visually striking display that reduced shipping costs while highlighting the company's human side. Each piece told a story, weaving together industry, philanthropy, and innovation. And the students behind the work received OC-funded scholarships.
Built to Flex
At the 2024 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting in Chicago, AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP delivered a masterclass in showcasing both scale and sustainability. Its 90-by-120-foot booth featured a sweeping, curved LED wall bisecting the commercial space, while color-coded seating zones made navigation intuitive. The medical affairs section maintained a subdued tone with its own LED display and quiet spaces for discussion. But the real standout was the exhibit's eco-friendly foundation: Desks and overhead elements were crafted from durable cardboard, and the entire booth was modular — designed to flex from massive island exhibits to far more modest footprints across the more than 50 events the company attends throughout the year. The result proved that even industry giants can make a big impact with a lighter footprint.
Dynamic Display
If your product is a spectacle, let it be the booth's magnet. That's exactly what LG Corp. did at Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2024 in Barcelona. In the front corner of its massive booth, the company erected a 6-by-3.5-meter kinetic LED tower — an unmissable attraction. The LED tiles moved forward and back, transforming the display's physical shape in sync with customized art content, showcasing LG's versatility and cutting-edge technology in creating interactive visual experiences.
Packed with Meaning
At Pack Expo 2024, United Barcode Systems Inc. made a memorable statement with a square overhead sign that looked more like something that would be found on a loading dock than in an exhibit hall. Designed to resemble a corrugated cardboard shipping box, the fabric structure featured printed details including barcodes, shipping labels, and handling instructions, with some graphics printed directly onto the “box” and others designed to look like applied labels. The clever design served as both branding and product demo, signaling the company's expertise in labeling, coding, and marking solutions before attendees even stepped foot in the booth. Signage often blends into the noise and this one stood out by looking like it didn't belong. This visual cue pulled double duty as form and function, and its eye-catching presence attracted foot traffic from aisles away.
Name Drop
At the 2024 Exhibitions & Conventions Executives Forum (ECEF), the founders of Backtrack set out to make a lasting impression. The company, which offers an audio recording app for trade show environments, assembled more than 230 personalized pouches that included a business card, a Starbucks gift card, and an embedded custom NFC chip. A tap of the chip led to a personalized landing page that featured the recipient's photo, name, title, company, and a thoughtful message referencing a shared connection or interest sourced from LinkedIn. Scrolling revealed a demo video, meeting scheduler, and product details. This custom outreach strategy quickly turned cold intros into warm conversations.
Unfold and Behold
At EuroShop 2023 in Düsseldorf, Paper Fantasies UAB, a Lithuania-based manufacturer specializing in 3D honeycomb paper products, proved that a small footprint doesn't have to mean a forgettable presence. Inside what was a modest 12-by-12-foot booth, the company let its products do all the storytelling by transforming two back walls into vibrant, artistic vignettes. One featured a flurry of crisp white decorations against a soft pink backdrop, while the other paired greens, blues, and yellows with a clean white background. Simple floor lighting and mounted spots added dimension without distraction, allowing the intricate forms to take center stage. In a hall dominated by massive builds and digital spectacle, the minimalist approach stood out and served as a powerful reminder that sometimes, the smartest design decision you can make is to get out of the product's way and let it shine.
