Tech-Centric Sustainability
QMy company's c-suite and our marketing team greatly value sustainability and try to incorporate it into everything we do. We're already pretty savvy, but I'm certain we can do more. Can you describe some of the technology tools and best practices I can use to make my trade show exhibits and corporate events even more sustainable than they already are?
sustainability innovations
For decades, events have prioritized spectacle over sustainability. Picture mountains of glossy brochures destined for landfills, power-hungry light shows that can be seen from space, and enough single-use waste to make an environmentalist weep. Brands may have gathered leads and fostered sales, but Mother Earth ended up with a serious hangover. But the industry has turned over a new (green) leaf, leading industry professionals to find ways to offset the environmental impact of their events.
Some of their prime practices include smart green tech, from digital tools that replace paper resources to power-smart systems reducing emissions. To help you do your part in your exhibits and events, here is a roundup of some of those sustainable innovations and their eco-friendly impact on events.
Digital Communication and Information Delivery. Gone are the days of printed brochures and plastic badges. Smart tech — comprising everything from emails, event apps, and interactive displays to virtual meetings, text messages, and QR code delivery — is rewriting the script of communication and information dissemination by hitting two birds — efficiency and convenience — with one stone.
Virtual Event Tickets. Skip the hard copies. Digital tickets are now the golden passes at events, letting attendees get through the door with just a click on their smartphones. Unlike traditional admission stubs, these innovations significantly reduce waste by not only omitting the use of paper but also cutting down energy required for printing, packaging, and distribution, which all have environmental costs.
Digital Signages. Static banners? Boring and outdated with a limited shelf life. You're likely not only replacing these elements frequently but also disposing of their predecessors, resulting in a one-two punch to Mother Nature.
So how can organizers keep branding fresh and dynamic? The answer: digital signage. These modern visuals upgrade any booth or event with cutting-edge features and impressive impact. And their reusability and energy efficiency make them a more sustainable display solution than traditional signs.
QR Code Information Delivery. Ditch the paper stacks. QR codes are the smart, space-saving, cost-effective alternatives to paper brochures, guides, and other printed resources. They eliminate the need for materials that often end up in the landfill or recycling bin.
Digital Badges. Digital badges are a sleek, convenient, and reusable green tech innovation that make identification, access control, and even venue navigation convenient without all the paper and plastic associated with traditional badges. What's not to love about a solution that offers a simplified guest experience and a lowered carbon footprint?
Energy Efficiency. While brightly lit stages and booths dazzle at expos and corporate events, a resource-depleting truth lurks beneath those beautiful spotlights: excessive energy consumption. From lighting to climate control, outdated systems waste electricity and assets, all while leaving hefty carbon emissions.
Smart green tech allows better energy management, enabling organizers to ensure power is used only when necessary and employed in the most effective ways possible. With green-powered systems, event managers can reduce operational costs and environmental impact.
LED Lighting Control and Timers. LED systems with programmable timers offer smart scheduling features that ensure no watt goes wasted. The result is reduced energy consumption and maximized efficiency. From turning on and off lighting fixtures to adjusting brightness levels, these innovations contribute to the sustainability of the event and decrease costs.
Smart Power Management Systems. Considered the brain behind energy setups, these autopilot systems optimize power usage across the venue to prevent downtime while prioritizing peak demand management. These systems keep the energy flowing only where it's needed, ensuring the power within the venue works smarter, not harder.
Obviously, an individual exhibit manager has little control over power management at a show's venue. However, exhibitors can collectively influence organizers to favor venues that have sustainable power practices.
Motion Sensor Lighting. Let the room decide when it needs illumination by using motion sensor lighting. With these upgrades, only occupied spaces are illuminated, making energy waste almost impossible in all corners of your booth and event environment.
Automated Climate Control. Keeping a space at a comfortable temperature is important; however, adjusting to the right temperature shouldn't sacrifice energy efficiency. That is what automated climate control is all about. These systems modify heating, cooling, and ventilation on the fly, creating a cozy environment that doesn't lead to carbon guilt.
Waste Management. Events always end with accumulated rubbish, so select venues that employ eco-friendly innovations to track, monitor, and optimize waste disposal. These tools help organizers turn their garbage woes into recycling wins, adding to their decarbonizing efforts.
Venues can take waste management one step further with IoT-enabled garbage bins. This technology detects waste levels in real time to make sure garbage is collected and recycled efficiently. It's a smarter and cleaner way to handle event leftovers. Again, if you have no control over which venue is chosen, consider working with other exhibitors or participants to encourage change within the hosting organization.
Let's Get Smart About Sustainability. With its stunning displays, eye-catching lights, and unforgettable experiences, the events industry is home to unforgettable spectacles. But behind this glamour is the not-so-pretty picture of sky-high energy use, mountains of waste, and a heavy carbon footprint. Thanks to smart green tech entering the scene, organizers now have the chance to save the Earth and wow the crowd at the same time.
Every step counts in shaping a more eco-conscious exhibit and event landscape as the call for greener practices grows louder. The tech tools presented here pair nicely with other green initiatives, e.g., swapping outdated materials and practices for smarter and more sustainable resources. This marriage, then, can drive a collective commitment to preserve the planet for generations to come. Remember: Every green decision makes a lasting difference. And with the power of eco-friendly tech, events can take center stage as both unforgettable spectacles and earth-friendly experiences.
