The House that George Built

The 1931 Colonial Exposition in Paris was designed to increase French citizens' knowledge of its colonies at a time when those colonies wanted to break away. Despite the United States being a breakaway colony itself, one of the expo's biggest attractions was a replica of George Washington's Mount Vernon home that Sears, Roebuck and Co. built at a mere 10 percent markup. An American architectural icon, Mount Vernon was replicated in at least six world's fairs between 1893 and 1934. After the Parisian expo, Sears added the Founding Father's home to its popular line of prefabricated, mail-order home kits.
