Designing Women
When its research showed that women influence 70 percent of automobile purchases, General Motors Co. LLC staged the Feminine Auto Show in 1958. Held at GM's Technical Center in Warren, MI, the show exhibited cars conceived by the automaker's handful of female designers. A Chevrolet came with lighted makeup mirrors and a vanity placed on the glove box, while an Oldsmobile sported dashboard controls for its rear-seat door latches and windows. Nearby, a Corvette featured retractable seat belts and a storage bin for a purse. Ignored at the time, the cars' amenities soon went from novelty to necessity.
